Original framework

KSA Flow

Capability as a progression, not a category.

Purpose

Existing competency language treats knowledge, skills, and abilities as parallel buckets. KSA Flow addresses a different question: where, specifically, does the conversion from information into reliable performance break down for this population and this task?

Core idea

Capability moves through a series of transitions. Information becomes knowledge when it is organized and retrievable. Knowledge becomes skill through structured practice. Skill becomes judgment through varied conditions and feedback. Judgment becomes performance only when the organization is aligned to permit it — and growth is what happens when performance feeds back into the system. Each transition has its own failure conditions and its own class of intervention.

System architecture

KSA Flow — model
  1. 01

    Information

Raw content exists, but is unorganized and unowned.

  2. 02

    Knowledge

    Organized, retrievable, understood in context.

  3. 03

    Practice

    Structured rehearsal under supportive conditions.

  4. 04

    Skill

    Reliable execution under expected conditions.

  5. 05

    Judgment

Appropriate decisions under varied and novel conditions.

  6. 06

    Aptitude

Transfer across adjacent problems and domains.

  7. 07

    Alignment

The environment permits and reinforces the capability.

  8. 08

    Growth

Capability compounds and improves the system that produced it.

Authentic work samples

Where knowledge stops moving

This artifact shows the points where capability breaks down, and what each break actually calls for. The wider set — the executive summary, the system in motion, and the implementation sequence — is on the home page and the frameworks overview.

DIAGNOSTIC MAPDiagnostic map

Where Knowledge Flow Breaks Down

Authentic diagnostic map showing representative failure patterns without publishing the underlying assessment instrument.

DIAGNOSTIC MAP

Where Knowledge Flow Breaks Down

A diagnostic map of common breakdowns between information, knowledge, skill, and ability, paired with the organizational conditions that create them.

The challenge
Teams could see that performance had failed but lacked language for locating the exact conversion point or distinguishing learning problems from organizational ones.
What this demonstrates
Systems diagnosis that links observable performance symptoms to capability and organizational causes.
How I can help your organization
I can facilitate a failure-point analysis that prevents your organization from solving the wrong problem with more content.

Authentic diagnostic visualization. Representative failure patterns are shown; assessment instruments and scoring are not published.

Application

  • Diagnosing why a well-designed program is not producing performance
  • Deciding whether an intervention needs content, practice, feedback, or organizational change
  • Designing curriculum architecture with explicit transitions rather than topic lists
  • Giving stakeholders language to discuss capability without defaulting to 'more training'
  • Explaining why an experienced performer regresses in an unfamiliar system

Availability

The public model presents the stage progression and its diagnostic intent. The applied diagnostic instruments, transition-level assessment methods, and facilitation process used in engagements remain proprietary and are not published.
