01

The Situation

Powerful stories often create attention and emotion, then stop when the viewing ends. The opportunity was to explore how documentary media could keep working as a structured learning experience without flattening the story into generic training.

02

The Challenge

Build rigorous learning around existing documentary media while preserving narrative integrity. The experience needed to help learners distinguish evidence from assumption, examine interacting causes, make a judgment, reconsider it after new evidence, and transfer a supported principle into another context.

03

Diagnosis

A story is not automatically curriculum. Its learning value has to be activated through intentional questions, evidence analysis, sequencing, reflection, decision-making, facilitation, and transfer. The design therefore had to make the learner think with the story rather than simply react to it.

04

My Role

  • Learning experience strategy and instructional architecture around existing documentary source media
  • Mapped documentary scenes to learning objectives and essential questions
  • Designed the three-arc learner journey and interactive activities
  • Designed the Decision Lab, reconsideration, transfer, and facilitator support
  • Developed and iterated the working interactive prototype around existing documentary media

05

Strategic Approach

Treat the documentary — existing source media I did not create, direct, produce, or own — as evidence rather than decoration. Start with the public story, complicate it with interacting factors, introduce a defensible decision before the recovery arc, then require learners to reconsider that decision using new evidence before transferring one principle to their own context.

06

Framework / Method

  • Story → EvidenceEncounter the story, then separate direct observation from interpretation and assumption.
  • Analysis → Systems ThinkingExamine interacting personal, social, environmental, relational, and structural factors instead of forcing a single-cause explanation.
  • Judgment → ReconsiderationMake a plausible support decision, then revisit it after seeing how intervention, recovery, structure, and belonging appear in the story.
  • Transfer → ApplicationApply a supported principle from a chosen perspective while naming the limits of generalizing from one person's experience.

What I Built

Three-arc interactive learning experience

Talent and public identity; risk, environment and consequence; support, recovery and purpose.

Nine documentary learning scenes

Separate individual clips mapped to specific instructional purposes and rigorous analysis questions.

Build the System activity

Learners connect interacting factors and identify what evidence supports or complicates those connections.

Decision Lab

Learners evaluate several plausible responses using evidence, privacy, autonomy, urgency, role boundaries, and continuity of support.

Reconsideration loop

Learners return to their initial judgment after new evidence and decide whether to keep, modify, or change it.

Transfer activity

Learners apply a supported principle from a selected perspective and identify a limitation to overgeneralization.

Facilitator view

Run of show, evidence-based debriefs, likely misconceptions, and transfer guidance.

10

Lessons / Evolution

The strongest version of the experience emerged when the design stopped asking learners merely how the story made them feel and instead required them to separate evidence from inference, examine interacting causes, make a judgment, reconsider it, and transfer learning without overgeneralizing one person's experience.
